About the Blog

This blog collects modern best practices for legal writing. I am a professional legal writer, and I write for attorneys all over the country. I started this blog to showcase some of the most effective legal writing tips and techniques — as well as classic pitfalls and danger zones. To be as illustrative as possible, I’ll post sample writing from appellate briefs, summary judgment memoranda, and other motions and responses from civil and criminal cases in state and federal court. I’ll also post the occasional judge’s tirade whenever the bench sees fit to blast an attorney’s writing shortfalls in a published opinion, so we can all learn from our colleagues’ mistakes! I welcome your feedback, as many writing techniques are entirely stylistic. But if you take nothing else from this blog, please hear this: lawyers — stop living in the dark ages! Nobody says “heretofore” anymore. For all you modern litigators, enjoy!
